Born in Santa Monica, California, and raised in Fargo, North Dakota, Greg Schulz is an aerial photographer and videographer living in Stillwater, MN. Greg grew up around photography, with his father being an award-winning professional portrait, wedding, and commercial photographer, and his mother and grandmother being retouchers. At a young age, Greg learned the craft of capturing events, places, and things, including shooting on the sidelines at events with Pentax and Hasselblad cameras. Learning how to shoot action on the sidelines of sporting events teaches you to compose and capture quickly while being aware of your surroundings lest you get run over. After High School, Greg attended Liberal Arts Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, earning a degree in computer science and business, then earning a Master of Science in Software Engineering at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN, and later authoring several Information technology-related books.
Leveraging his background in photography, various activities, and software engineering, Greg approaches projects with an open-minded framework for what to capture to convey a story or objective, often having a plan that is deviated from to be flexible and adaptable. His approach is just to shoot: have a concept, a vision, an objective. However, while framing up and composing, don’t forget to have fun and get the shot —use and experiment with different techniques, while always learning and exploring new ideas, tools, and techniques. He is equally comfortable in the field, literally capturing imagery during day, night, winter, spring, summer, and fall, as well as in the editing suite (e.g., the digital darkroom). Today, Greg uses and shares his experiences with the attendees of his seminars and classes, reminding them to turn around and look around. You might not be seeing the best shot through the viewfinder; it might be around, up, or down from your field of view.
