Junior Graphic Designer / Graphic Designer:

Trope Publishing Co. is seeking a creative and motivated Junior Graphic Designer or Graphic Designer for our growing book and print business. This designer will work closely with the Senior Designer to produce and design Trope’s high-end, artfully-crafted, and diverse range of books— ensuring consistency and high standards throughout. A successful candidate will have a passion for book design and be excited to assist in designing beautifully-produced coffee table books on travel, arts, and photography. The Junior Graphic Designer/Graphic Designer must possess a strong understanding of, and experience in, print design for multiple-page documents (books & zines) as well as digital design experience to help promote and market the books produced at Trope.

This position is based in Chicago, Illinois with office space at the Kimball Arts Center. This is not a remote position.

Key responsibilities:

  • Work closely with marketing, editorial, and design colleagues to produce and assist
    in design for a diverse range of books.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously, balancing creative design with production deadlines.
  • Collaborate with the editorial team to conceptualize and design book covers and interior pages, ensuring alignment with the theme and tone of the content, while also ensuring brand consistency.
  • Produce complementary social media graphics, website assets, and other promotional materials to encourage sales and promote new and existing books.
  • Assist in the book production process through photo editing, resizing photos, matching
    color profiles, and ensuring design consistency throughout.
  • Design within and help to maintain company design templates for books that fall within a larger series.
  • Communicate with factories and printers to ensure high-quality and accurate printing, review proofs, and articulate changes.
  • Help to manage Trope’s print business, including fulfillment of customer print orders and framing.
  • Work with marketing colleagues to design and create print and web marketing
    collateral and sales materials as needed.
  • Manage internal product photography of books and prints, keeping consistent with the brand aesthetic.
  • Stay up-to-date on art, design, typography, and publishing trends.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

Expertise and qualifications:

  • A degree in graphic design or related field required. Publishing experience is a plus.
  • 2+ years relevant work experience required—both print and web experience preferred.
  • Social media/marketing design and photography experience is a plus.
  • Expertise in Adobe Creative Suites, including a strong focus on InDesign and Photoshop.
  • A solid understanding of the print design process and in preparing press-ready files.
  • Strong typographic and layout skills, with ability to adapt designs based on constructive feedback.
  • Must be able to work independently and in collaboration with the editorial, design, and marketing teams.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills required.
  • Must be self-motivated, highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to multi-task with delivering high quality work.
