Born and raised in New Jersey, Joy developed a lifelong passion for the arts at a young age, whether through seeing Broadway shows, attending the symphony, or visiting art museums. Her first camera was a small Casio digital camera gifted by her uncle after a trip to Taiwan to visit her family. From there, photography became a way of preserving memories from vacations and providing snapshots for the high school yearbook club.
After moving to San Francisco in 2022 for work, she wanted to find a creative outlet that was completely separate from her 9-to-5. Photography encouraged her to explore different neighborhoods while adjusting to the nuances of a new city. She was initially attracted to the vibrant colors of the Victorian houses throughout SF, but she soon found the compositions of classic SF landmarks more compelling. While she still cycles between taking photos at the Golden Gate Bridge, Lands End, and Ocean Beach, lately you can find her climbing up one of the many hills to get a panoramic view of the city or taking in the details of a still-life shot through a restaurant window. Photography pushed her out of her comfort zone and has become a way for her to notice the quiet moments, knowing that what she captures today will be a record for the future of how it used to be.
Joy shoots on an Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark II with the M.Zuiko 12-45mm f/4 as her primary lens.
