Mike Szpot

From an early age, Mike Szpot showed a creative side, shooting skateboarding videos with his friends. His interest in photography took hold one random day when he happened to come upon a photographer on Instagram whose work completely enthralled him. He was instantly inspired to pick up his camera and start exploring his surroundings, and from that moment on the passion that ensued has dominated his life. For Mike, it has given him a whole new perspective, opening doors of opportunity that he never had imagined before.

In terms of style, Mike tries to avoid limiting himself to one look or genre, preferring to experiment with a bit of everything from cityscape to portraiture. The one common theme across his work is an urban, moody feel, reflecting his tendency to be drawn to the grittier side of things. He uses Lightroom for editing, working with his own custom presets to start and then adjusting to achieve the desired effect. Mike’s work is featured in Trope Chicago, the first in the Trope City Editions series, a collection of urban and architectural photography books of cities around the world by today’s emerging photographers.

Mike's Prints

"I have a handful of friends and photographers who constantly keep me motivated and inspired. Other sources of inspiration include films, travel, literature, and anyone relentlessly chasing their dreams. For me, a perfect photography assignment would be to shoot aerial or travel photographs of cities around the world."
