Paulo Shishido

Born in Lima, Peru, of Peruvian and Japanese descent, and raised in Miami from the age of six months, Paulo has been photographing since 2012 when his son, Luca, was born. He is influenced, primarily by his son. From a young age, he has been influenced by Hip Hop, movies, and musical scores which fuels and is incorporated into his work. Among his favorite movies are Back to the Future (composer- Alan Silvestri), the MCU (Alan Silvestri for Avengers & Ludwig Göransson for Black Panther), Interstellar (Hans Zimmer), Mighty Ducks (David Newman), Superman: The Movie (John Williams) and Dumb & Dumber (for comedic purposes- g’day mate!). His Hip Hop influences are rooted in the 90s (Wu Tang, Nas, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Mobb Deep, Jay Z, Biggie, Gang Starr, Black Star, OutKast, 2Pac and Dilla), early to mid 2000s (Eminem, J. Cole, Kendrick, and Logic) and the Rawkus and Soulquarians eras.

Although his photography journey started by photographing his son, the seeds of creativity and documenting had been planted much earlier. His father was the family photographer and it was always engrained in him to document his environment. What started out as a hobby photographing his son, Paulo's photography progressed from his home to the streets of South Florida with the influence of his best friend Jonathan (@jonjonvisuals). He caught the eye of Chocolate Milk Photography- comprised of Yesi and Hev, based in Miami (rest in photography Hev) from the photos he was taking of his son and sharing on Instagram. They took him under their wing to show him the ropes of family/commercial photography. Paulo began using VSCO to edit his work and eventually learned Lightroom and some Photoshop. He’s a versatile photographer, a jack of all trades. His favorite style of photography are details and motion/panning and building storyboards with his posts on Instagram.

Paulo's photography journey also included briefly documenting Miami graffiti with his cousin on disposable Kodak cameras during his high school years. When his son was born, he used an iPhone to photograph and eventually grabbed his dad’s Canon 60D. After learning more and more about the basics of photography and shooting manual, he bought his Canon 5DMIII with a 35mm 1.4L lens in April 2016. A few months later he purchased a 24mm 1.4L. He graduated from a crop censor to a full-frame and that has been his primary body ever since. When traveling to Havana, Cuba in January 2018, he used Jonathan’s 85mm 1.8 and fell in love with it. Towards the end of the year he purchased an 85mm 1.4L and it is his go-to lens. His other travels include: Japan, Canada, Peru, and the US (CA, DC, NC, NY, and WA).

1005 Photography LLC (pronounced Ten-Oh-Five) was created in 2016 and it’s a direct reference of his son’s birthday, October 5th. That’s when Paulo finally gave into Luca’s mom pushing him to create a place for his photography. However, he does not see photography through a monetary lens, but more so a creative escape. His advice to anyone wanting to get into anything creative is- do not measure or compare yourself to anyone else. continue to learn. you are unique. do not feel pressure to create. and remember you cannot spell heart without ART.
