Simon Shim is a photographer based in the San Francisco Bay Area whose street, architecture, and commercial work is built around a single conviction: a photograph should return the emotion the place gave him. San Francisco is his standing subject and his proving ground. Fog rewrites a block between one visit and the next. Light lands right on a given corner for only a few weeks a year. It's a city photographed to death, but if you look twice, they are full of frames nobody has bothered to take. His images have appeared in print and online publications.
His method is patient and curious by design. He finds a composition he likes and then waits for something to happen, a street photographer's habit he carries into every shoot. He plans, maps locations, and times great lighting, and then treats the plan as disposable, since the best frames tend to be the ones nobody else planned for. He travels light, and shares his work and presets at simonshim.com. When he isn't on assignment, he's usually out walking the city with a camera on his shoulder, looking for the shot he's walked past a hundred times.
