Urban spaces, both gritty and highly polished, are what most often draw the interest of William Self - a Toronto-based visual storyteller in both his profession that's based in videography and in his pastime as a photographer. When William hits the streets, he does so without a preconceived plan, choosing instead to simply follow interesting light. This "go with the flow" approach allows him to explore spontaneous ideas across without restrictions - exploring architecture, public transit systems, city streets, to the urban dwellers he encounters along the way. While his subject matter varies, his aesthetic remains consistent, anchored by a signature palette of cinematic cerulean, golden yellows, and deep, dark reds.
“Photography to me has become so much more than capturing split-second moments. I often strike up random interactions with curious onlookers, and I find those moments to be a deeply rewarding part of the process. Looking back at my work, I’m reminded not just of the places I’ve visited, but also of the interesting conversations I’ve had along the way”.
