Behind the Shot with Jamey Price

Come "behind the shot" with photographer Jamey Price as he shares a few stories behind some of his favorite photos from his upcoming book, Racing Unfiltered.

Jamey is an award-winning motorsport and automotive photographer from Charlotte, North Carolina, whose work has taken him to more than 27 countries. When he first saw NASCAR's promotional film cameras from the 1990s show up on another photographers social media feed, he knew he had to have one. They were inexpensive, poorly made, and plastic, yet Jamey spent a year capturing the world of motorsports on them. Racing Unfiltered captures the highs, lows, and candid moments of racing, all through the lens of these vintage film cameras.

Racing Unfiltered is available for pre-order at Trope.com and will be available late November.

Jordan Taylor, Wayne Taylor Racing, Rolex 24 at Daytona

Jordan Taylor, Wayne Taylor Racing

This happens to be the first photo in the book, but also one I love. During the Rolex 24-hour, NBC kind of puts together a fun studio with cool lighting. My friend, and one of the drivers of my client (Wayne Taylor Racing) was set up for some hero shots, and I pulled the camera out and took a picture while he was doing his filming. It was perfectly lit, which was good for these simple little cameras where I can’t change settings.

Ford Mustang GTD Pro, IMSA WeatherTech Laguna Seca

The fun thing about these cameras is that they have a fairly slow shutter speed, just in how they were made and designed. Which means you can actually pan with them to give the effect of motion in the photo. It has also created problems where the shutter speed is too slow and some of the photos I’ve taken are soft, i.e. not in focus. But when you are purposely trying to show motion, it’s fun. The Mustang GTD Pro car was also running a special livery for that race weekend which made it fun to photograph.

Judges Derek Bell and Stephan Winkelmann, Pebble Beach Concours D'Elegance

As I’ve said before, these cameras are extremely cheap and poorly made. I had one break on me while I was at Monterey Car Week. I’m not sure what happened, but the shutter broke. Which means I was essentially making double exposures on the same piece of film. This particular photo is kind of fun because it shows some of the Monterey Car Week atmosphere, and also in the same photo, legendary racing driver Derek Bell and Lamborghini’s CEO Stephan Winkelmann admiring a very famous car driven by Juan Manuel Fangio.

Lewis Hamilton Scuderia Ferrari, Formula 1 Pre-Season Testing Bahrain International Circuit

Lewis Hamilton’s first weekend with Ferrari was certainly something to talk about, and it shows in pictures. The 7-time world champion teaming up with one of the most legendary racing brands in the world was on everyone’s mind. So, I used the opportunity to take a quick photo as he was being pushed back into the garage during Bahrain pre-season testing in February 2025.
