The Making of Trope Tokyo (Revised + Expanded)

The Making of Trope Tokyo (Revised + Expanded)

Trope Tokyo Revised Book Mockup_Side Angle.jpg__PID:eb1fe5d7-5b1a-4023-8f2a-62db8fbbcacf

The fourth volume in the Trope City Edition series, Trope Tokyo celebrates the architecture and urban landscapes of Japan's capital city, a dynamic metropolis fusing the ancient and the ultramodern. Following its original publication in 2020, the Tokyo Edition was revised and expanded in 2026 to present a current and more comprehensive view of the city.

This carefully curated and bound collection offers a new perspective of Tokyo. From high above Tokyo Tower to the scramble and energy of Shibuya Crossing, these images command a strong point of view: digitally processed, filtered, toned, de-saturated and sharpened for a very urban sensibility. Each of the book’s six chapters is accompanied by a map identifying where each photograph was taken, helping readers explore the city’s neighborhoods and streets. Showcasing both the quiet traditionalism and sleek futurism of contemporary Tokyo, the photographs reveal distinctive and dramatic visions of one of the world's greatest cities.

This updated edition features work from 23 photographers including Jessamine Barnieh, Oliver Bunica, Yoshito Hasaka, Yoshiro Ishii, Tetsuo Ishikawa, Keita Kikkawa, Yusuke Komatsu, Sanmi Krueger, Neal Kumar, Chanipol Kusolcharttum, Sam Landers, Vivien Liu, Antonio Lopez, Ken Lum Lee, Mine Manap Turel, Thomas Milton, Shōgo Misawa, Eren Sarigul, Wataru Sato, Andy Shigekawa, Mitsuru Wakabayashi, Yuto Yamada, and Stella Yan.

Why We Expanded the Original Edition

When Trope Tokyo was first published in 2020, it captured the city in a precise moment in time. Over the past six years, the city has continued to evolve at a rapid pace. New buildings have reshaped the skyline, and street life, fashion, and public spaces have adapted new styles.

With the original edition now sold out, the editors at Trope felt the most meaningful approach was to expand and revise the original edition rather than reprinting.

How We Revisited the Book

When looking through the original edition, Trope expected the revised portion of the book to roughly be about 40% new, leaving 60% of the original edition in place. As we began to review the new photography and revisit what has changed within the city, it became clear that Tokyo’s recent transformation called for a more substantial expansion. The updated edition is now composed of approximately 70% new photography and 30% work from the original edition, adding 6 new photographers and updated images from returning photographers. This approach allowed the book to maintain its original structure while expanding on new additions within the city of Tokyo.

What’s New in the Revised + Expanded Edition

The revised and expanded edition showcases new buildings and updated perspectives of the city, including new architectural developments like the Tokyu Kabukicho Tower, Azabudai Hills, and the ever-changing Shibuya Scramble. Trope Tokyo (Revised + Expanded) shows both permanence and change in this contemporary portrait of Tokyo.

In our next post, we’ll look more closely at how Tokyo itself has changed over the past five years and how it’s reflected in specific photographs throughout the book.
