As 2024 draws to a close, we find ourselves reflecting on a year filled with milestones, creativity, and collaboration. It has been an incredible journey, and we’re excited to share some highlights that made this year so memorable for Trope Publishing Co.
Expanding Our Collection
This year, we released 9 new books, each showcasing unique stories and perspectives from around the world. We saw the addition of two stunning new books to the City Edition series, Trope Paris and Trope Los Angeles. We revisited one of our favorite cities through the nighttime lens of Bal Bhatla (aka Mr Whisper) with London After Dark and by diving into the underground cabaret scene with Life as a Cabaret. We released the fifth book in David Lee Csicsko’s colorful People Series, Iconic Artists. We explored our hometown of Chicago in new ways with Chicago in Color and The Salt Shed. And we launched our new series of aerial photography books with Above & Across Chicago and Above & Across Atlanta.
Collaborating with Talent
We had the privilege of working with 45 new photographers and artists. Their talent and vision have brought fresh energy to our projects, pushing boundaries and redefining how we see the world. These collaborations are the heart of what we do, and we’re deeply grateful for their contributions.
Moving Offices and Growing Our Team
In March 2024, we moved into a new office space, a change that marks a fresh chapter for Trope Publishing. Our new space in the Kimball Art Center not only provides us with more room to grow but also allows the creativity, inspiration, and community around us to help define our work.
We also welcomed two new team members. Kendra Huspaska is our new Senior Designer and Kate Landers joined as Marketing & Partnership Manager. Their passion has already made a significant impact, and we’re thrilled to have them onboard as we continue to evolve.
Connecting with Our Chicago Community
One of the year’s highlights was 3 successful in-person events with multiple Trope Artists.
In July, we hosted a gallery event and launch party for Above & Across Chicago, featuring prints from the book that showcase Chicago's iconic skyline, diverse architecture, and a new perspective of Chicago that can only be captured by air. We were lucky to be joined by 8 of the 15 talented photographers featured in the book.
In September, Trope joined photographer and author Sandra Steinbrecher, along with over 100 friends, family, and colleagues, at The Salt Shed’s beautiful Three Top Lounge and roof deck overlooking the iconic outdoor music venue and the Chicago River to celebrate the publication of The Salt Shed: The Transformation of a Chicago Landmark. In October, we were excited to welcome Judit Prat Martí, photographer of Chicago in Color, back to Chicago to promote her book. In partnership with the University of Chicago, we saw a pop-up gallery featuring images from the book, and Judit led a guided walk of the Pullman neighborhood, "Pullman in Color", highlighting the locations that appear in book. Judit also appeared at a sold-out book signing and talk at Seminary Coop. Read more about Judit’s event here.
These gatherings allowed us to connect directly with readers, artists, and partners, fostering a sense of community and shared passion. In addition to these events, we also participated in numerous bookstore signings, where we met so many of you who support our mission. Each event was a reminder of the vibrant and engaged audience that makes everything we do worthwhile.
Looking Ahead at 2025
As we step into 2025, we carry the momentum and lessons of this past year. Our commitment to storytelling, collaboration, and creativity remains unwavering, and we can’t wait to see where the next year takes us.
